Annual report – again

Here thus my experiences of this year:

To produce the Entblätterung around the bloom accomplished with the goal by Assimilatknappheit a certain Verrieselung and thereby loosened up grapes/clusters. In addition itself so the small berries can equal against the sun abhärten.

Annual report – plant protection

Here a small review of our plant protection measures of this year:

Plant protection

Treated due to the extremely strong Phomopsisbefalls in the previous year the two Köwericher of vineyards drove out directly off twice before the beginning of the helicopter squirting. Afterwards Phomopsis was 2005 still to small extent in the vineyard present.

After end the of the squirt still three times by hand, the the last mark treat to the third weekend, in order can let the the grape hang if possible to at the end of October/at the beginning of November.
The total costs for plant protection lay very highly. After a determination of the costs due to the used up plant protection agents and the reallocation of the helicopter costs, the costs amount to standardized approximately 2000 € per hectar and require urgently the optimization.

In the course of the summer amazingly many Rebstöcke showed acute dying features, probably due to of Esca. Some could be protected by immediate removing of all grapes/clusters and thus a discharge death. All sticks are replaced mark us in the winter by new vines.

Annual report – leaves work & thinning out

Since it gives to say to the leaves cut of this year not too much, here the analysis of thinning out is added equal.

Leaves cut

The Wüchsigkeit of all plants was generally satisfying. In Klüsserath due to the wuchstarken document 5BB somewhat more strongly, in Köwerich probably due to the strong previous year load somewhat more weakly.

With twice leaves cut was everything done, exactly as intended.

Thin out

Removing the grapes/clusters took place in the second August week. This date was already too late for the very wüchsige Vertikoanlage also due to the damp weather, since to this date sealing-off features at the grapes/clusters were to be seen. Also many berries were hurt by dividing the large Gescheine, which became already slowly soft.

Nevertheless no secondary infections were to be observed. Luck had!
In the plants in those and those was well entblättert particularly loose grapes/clusters exhibited, was only very moderately thinned out.

In the Moselpfahlanlage (Köwerich above) on all stub impulses on a grape/cluster per impulse and this was back-cut with appropriate size still divided around a tidy sheet fruit relationship to ensure.

Annual report – vintage

With a short review of the grape/cluster vintage of this year we already are at the end of the annual report.

In the next article the clear representation of the work times follows.
Vintage

The grape/cluster vintage became good despite the partial extreme upward gradient. All grapes/clusters were created by hand, without rope hoist, from the vineyard, which proved as still as relatively efficient, since e.g. no second person was needed for the operation of a rope hoist.

Due to the small surface the vintage was terminated after 5 days with some aids organized at short notice. The organization of aids turns out for a Kleinstbetrieb as difficult, since one can measure hardly the exact read time, while large enterprises are several weeks anyway in the vintage.

Annual report – result

Here thus promised like a small summary of the yearly in data and facts:
Result of the external works

It is shown as expected that the work expended is significantly smaller in wire-supported plants in the comparison to the Moselpfahlerziehung.

Thus there are actually still people

Thus there are actually still people, which in he pension again blossom and take up an old handicraft again.

Rudolf Biwer from Kasel is like that one.

He has to build again begun Holzfässer now and is pleased at any time about orders. And like it reported me, considerable viticulture domains again large quantity of Holzfässer (Fuder) ordered. So completely the wood barrel development did not become extinct yet.

My thanks to it, for the expert investigation of our Holzfässer and the maintaining and cleaning tips from first hand.

Here a few its basic rules:
No chemistry! None pickles uses, separates only heissbrühen.
Coldly nachbrühen! Super+importantly. Cold water is still the best cleaning. Particularly the cold Nachbrühen removes the dirt, which was loosened by the Heissbrühen. The Spunte does not forget to lock, so that a vacuum develops.
Store Brühen with cold water after that. A few days, then taste. Repeat if necessary again.
Storage with 70g/1000l SO2 and 3kg citric acid, in order to produce a wine-similar environment.
Keep bung full!

If one considers everything with storing, one can actually save the Heissbrühen, since the barrels are always clean. Before the autumn rinse out and completely.

Expenditure-fermented

After I watched now my Riesling quite a long while the second fermentation (BSA), he was nevertheless finally aufgeschwefelt this weekend, in hope that no sauerkraut clay/tone remains.

I find, the mild acid do not stand to the wine not badly. But it presents itself definitely differently than its brothers, who did not go through BSA. A strong acid stands for the Riesling nevertheless well to face.

In any case one is characterized the barrel and can be now avoided or used purposefully.

Last week

Last week I swivelled still the useful Holzfässer, which are still in our cellar.
A Fuder rests already in a Holzfass. Unfortunately I can for lack of Moneten not completely with high-grade steel tanks cover itself up and must therefore to the good old Holzfässer fall back.

Lately one deliberates oneself anyway the fact that in this bundle still maturing processes run off, which remain malfunctioned for the wine stored in the high-grade steel.

There however my dilemma lies: A few Holzfässer easy defects have and would have to be repaired. Who can still make sowas?

I believe the Fassküfer am a becoming extinct race among the craftsmen. That is more than unfortunate, because I know still some winegrowers still in the Holzfass develop and very good wines produce.

Thus do I become on weekend the few telephone numbers of (former?) Fassküfern through-ring, which I together-looked for laboriously to find in hope still someone which still exercises its handicraft.

A question of the strategy

At our Sundays walk of yesterday we went past with us admitted winegrowers and before the rain refuge searching in its trying room stored ourselves. We received apart from a few Gläsern grape juice for the children also the customer discussion.

It is already toilsome to bring its wine at the customers. One sacrifices two hours of its around finally 18 or 24 bottles wine to sell Sunday in the afternoon. OK ONE – the customer was advised well, was to be high-content and possibly Christmas shut will again slam. Therefore am not I today.

We ask ourselves at present, which general marketing direction for our Weingut is to be hit. In addition there are probably following both extremes:

1. Well going wine tube been because of the yard with catering trade and culture program, as meanwhile quite well positioned a Weingut in Longuich , directly at the motorway exit, in the middle in the vineyards. In this case one sells nearly everything starting from yard, a majority in the open bar cash. One is usually at home, must however for its customers into the late evening be available and must itself one sends wine tube to furnish (expensively).

2. Wine dispatch and/or marketing over third. There hardly still customers would come specially past separate one operate his acquisition in such a manner that one can ship directly, either directly to the customer or to the middleman. There one is much on the way for transport or acquisition. One has enormous transport costs or must with the paragraph over third its margins a good piece down-turn.

The truth lies probably somewhere between them for the very most practicing winegrowers. The question is, in which direction one wants to move.

In addition one must answer oneself to a few questions:

- Are I gladly on the way?

Difficult questions, if one has the total liberty of the choice. We tend probably rather toward the second solution. How far one must die there however compromises will show up.
